New Fall Comedies: October 2015

oct_comedy

The best looking comedies coming out this month are on pay cable and streaming channels with Ash VS Evil Dead (continuing the Evil Dead franchise), Red Oaks (coming-of-age comedy set in mid-1980s), and Casual (newly divorced mom figuring out how to date again). I feel Crazy Ex-Girlfriend could go either way in the bad to good camp while Dr. Ken and Truth Be Told do not look funny at all.

Ash vs Evil Dead

Ash VS Evil Dead

Creator: Sam Raimi

It continues the Evil Dead story where Ash still works retail, but at Value Stop now, and unintentionally unleashes the undead. He convinces his co-workers to join the fight to stop evil.

Critics: It’s the perfect mix of horror and comedy. It has the same gory and hilarious elements from the movies. The premiere is directed by Sam Raimi. He plans to direct more if there is a second season.

redoaks

In the summer of 1985 at a New Jersey country club, a college student tries to figure out what he wants to do with his life while doing his summer job of assistant tennis pro.

Critics: Fun coming-of-age comedy that is set around 1985 but doesn’t rely on the time period for the jokes.

casual

After a divorce a woman, and her teenage daughter, move in with her bachelor brother and she tries to casually date.

crazyexgirlfriend

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend

Cast: Rachel Bloom, Donna Lynne Champlin, Santino Fontana

Creator: Aline Brosh McKenna

A young girl is crushed when her summercamp boyfriend doesn’t want to continue the romance at the end of summer. Ten years later, she is a successful lawyer in New York when she runs into him. He is impressed with how she turned out but is about to move to West Covina, CA but tells her if she is ever out that way, maybe they can hang out. She quits her job and moves out west to chase what she feels is her one true love. It is also a musical.

Critics: The concept seems like it could be annoying, but it has been popular with critics and fans of Jane the Virgin.

drken

Dr. Ken

Premieres Friday, October 2, 2015 at 8:30/7:30c on ABC

Cast: Ken Jeong, Suzy Nakamura, Tisha Campbell-Martin, Jonathan Slavin, Kate Simses, Albert Tsai, Krista Marie Yu, Dave Foley

Creator: Ken Jeong, Jared Stern

Ken Jeong used to be a doctor before he became an actor. Now he’s playing one a bad family sitcom.

Critics: Ken Jeong seems to be better suited as a scene stealer than as a leading man. His character is unlikeable and loud, while the rest of the cast is really good. If he would tone it down, this comedy could be decent, but right now it is pretty terrible.

truthbetold

Truth Be Told

Premieres Friday, October 16, 2015 at 8:30/7:30c on NBC

Cast: Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Tone Bell, Vanessa Lachey, Bresha Webb

Creator: DJ Nash

Two young couples that hang out and talk about any topic, no matter how crazy, like race or sex. oooh!

Critics: All the taboo topics seemed forced and aren’t funny which makes watching a likeable cast pretty much unbearable.
