Ex Machina

ExMachina

I have a thing for robot movies, especially ones dealing with artificial intelligence. Even if most of them end up with the same general plot line that artificial intelligence is bad and should not be developed, I still want to watch it. That may bias my opinion of Ex Machina since I was already predisposed to like it, but I did really enjoy it.

It is about an isolated weird genius type, Nathan played by Oscar Isaac, who has created an artificial intelligent robot and has a computer programmer, Caleb played by Domhnall Gleeson, come stay with him for a week in his middle of nowhere mountain fortress where you can only access it by a helicopter. He wants this guy to give his robot the Turing test which determines if the robot can pass as human. With the robot having a female form and pretty face he becomes attracted to her and when she starts telling him that she is trapped and needs to escape, he doesn’t know if he should believe her or her creator.

Oscar Isaac doesn’t play the typical weird genius type since he looks like he could be your bro that works out and drinks a bit too much. He is believable as someone that is a little off his rocker and a tad scary at times. You might be that way too when the only people you really talk to are robots you programmed.

This was a different kind of sci-fi movie. There was not a lot of action. It was more cerebral. I enjoyed the moodiness of the entire film. There were quite a few scenes where not much was said or someone was watching someone else on a video screen with the sound off. It helped set the overall mood.

I loved the ending. It was the right amount of messed up that fit with the rest of the movie. I do have to say my favorite part was a weirdass dance sequence that takes place during one of Nathan’s drunken binges. It was slightly odd and didn’t fit in with the rest of the movie, but entertained me enough that I am glad it was there.
