Amazing Race: Scary Heights

Teams that fought last time (JJ team) or all the time (Blair & Hayley) got along this leg! The lawyers didn’t fair so well though. I’m pretty sure they hate each other. Come read what Amy, Steve and I said about teams dressing fancy while running around Monaco getting lost and getting sweaty on this sixth episode of the Amazing Race.

As we watched the previously part of the episode, Steve was making up couple names for each person shown, so Bergen & Kurt became Kergen, Matt & Ashley became Mashley, and Hayley & Blair became Hair. As for who would be going home picks, Amy said, “I am not going to guess another team until Hayley is gone!! #saveblair” I said that I was going to pick the truck stop team because they seem to get lost a lot, even though they were one of my favorite teams. Steve decided to pick the lawyers.

Airport Fun Times

Teams were flying to Nice, France where they would be fitted for fancy formal wear so they could fly in a helicopter to Monaco. The Olympians left the pit stop in first place and got the last two seats on the earliest arriving flight at 5:05pm. JJ team, Hayley & Blair,  Laura & Tyler and the lawyers were all on a flight that landed at 5:55pm. For some reason, the hair stylists were at the airport second, but ended up with a flight that landed at 6:15pm. The truckers were the last team to leave the pit stop, almost two hours after the team before them. They found a flight that arrived at 8:45pm, but when they were wandering the airport, they saw the Olympians about to board a plane and asked if they could get put on the standby list. They ended up making it on. None of the other teams knew they made it onto that first flight so they were all feeling pretty good about at least one team behind them.

Getting Dressed Up

The Olympians and truckers arrived to get fitted for suits and long dresses. The second flight of teams were all sipping on champagne in another room when the truckers came out, shocking all of them that the team got ahead of them. We also got to hear about the JJ team were really hitting it off. They got over their tensions from the last leg and were all lovey-dovey again while all the other blind date teams looked on awkwardly at them.

Getting Sweaty in Fancy Clothes

None of the airport drama mattered because after everyone was fitted for their outfits, they had to pick them up the next day so it was pretty much an equalizer. The only advantage was teams were able to get into a helicopter in the order they were fitted for their outfits, but the helicopters seemed to take off and land one after another so it wasn’t that big of a deal.

We did get to learn that Monaco had tons of wealthy people and it was only one square mile in size. This played a part when teams had to run all around Monaco for the road block.

After teams arrived, they encountered a road block where one team member got to treat the other one by running on foot to pick up roses at a garden and some chocolates at a chocolate shop while the other teammate waited for them aboard a yacht. The garden was up on a hill so there was some running to get to it, which had to be fun for the guys wearing suits and the women in their long dresses. At least all the women were wearing flats. I would have felt super bad if they were wearing heels.

The Olympians and truckers were the first two teams to get to Monaco. Both guys decided to do the road block. The lawyers and Laura & Tyler arrived next and both women decided to do it. Laura ran into Jenny after Jenny had purchased a map and asked if they wanted to work together to get it done faster. Jenny agreed. When Jenny was picking out the chocolates, she made a comment about how since she was going through the trouble of getting the chocolates, she would be the one eating them so she picked out what she liked. I said, “I think Jenny misses the point of getting a gift for someone.” Steve said, “Jenny is pretty horrible.” To continue on with her horribleness, when she delivered the gifts to Jelani, she jokingly yelled, “Here’s your roses! And here’s your damn chocolate!” She’s just a bit obnoxious.

Shockingly, Hayley was really excited to do it. She said that since Blair really got them through the last leg, it was her turn to do something. Doing something nice for Blair? Weird! We did get to see while other people were running around getting the roses and chocolate, Hayley was just walking her slow pace like usual. You think someone that young and skinny would have more energy, but she is slow!

The Olympians were done with the task and onto the next one while Mike had the flowers and roses, but just had to find the yacht. He went up to a high point to see if he could find the marked yacht from there, but I think he was too far away to tell. There were two different directions that he could go and he didn’t want to go to the wrong one, but he stressed about it for a while. He finally picked one and it was the wrong one. This is why they get lost. They should not trust their gut with directions.

Map Drama

After the road block, teams had to go to the casino in Monte Carlo and spin the wheel in roulette. If they landed on red, they would go to Don’t Slack Off. If they landed on black, they would go to Win by a Nose. Teams didn’t know what either detour was and it also seemed like they couldn’t switch detours. Was this really a detour? It was like the weird one where they had to take a water taxi or tuk tuk that wasn’t really a detour. They should call these tasks something else.  Anyway, after teams were done selecting their detour, they had to pick up a Ford Fiesta from the valet. Amy said, “The valets are thinking, Ford Fiesta? Seriously?”

The Olympians took off immediately saying they knew where to go to their detour location. The truckers did something smart and actually went to find directions before they started driving. They found out where they were headed is not in Monaco.

While the lawyers and Laura & Tyler were waiting for their fancy Fords, Laura made a comment to Tyler that she had Jenny’s map when they did the road block together. Jenny didn’t hear Laura say that, but was asking Jelani where the map was because she was sure she gave it to him. He said he was holding everything she gave to him. She was positive he threw it away or something. We loved how everything is someone else’s fault, when she lost the map or forgot what she did with it. Laura & Tyler snuck away to not be around in case Jenny realized Laura had it. When they did finally get in their car, Jelani who had driven a stick in the previous leg said he was no good at it since it wasn’t going anywhere. The dork left the parking brake on. He never figured it out, but just switched to Jenny driving.

The Olympians could have used a map since they missed that the church they were looking for was in Eze, which it said in the clue. They had been driving around Monaco looking for a church so they wasted quite a bit of time before they got to where they needed to be.

Slack or Sniff

The truckers ended up at their detour first. They had landed on Win by a Nose. They had to create a perfume and cologne from a bunch of different essential oils that were on a table. They had a sheet that told them how much of each one to put into a container except for a few of them the scents were written down on the sheet, but the oil bottles were labeled #1-#12. They had to figure out which one was which to finish the task. The judge was a perfume person that would sniff each creation to see if it was correct.

The lawyers were the next team to get to their detour, which was Don’t Slack Off. Teams had to zipline 2,000 feet above the city and then walk a slack line back to the other side. We all felt good that Rochelle didn’t have to do it since she was scared of heights.

The truckers were not getting along at the task. Mike was really into Rochelle just concentrating on her perfume while he concentrated on his cologne, even though she was struggling. Laura & Tyler showed up and they were working together where she was finding all the scents on the list and lining them up in order while he measured them out. It seemed more efficient.

Blair & Hayley showed up to the perfume task and said it was going to be easy because of they both minored in chemistry. It is just measuring liquid, so I’m not sure how chemistry really helps here, but they were getting along still so we were shocked.  The Olympians finally showed up at the perfume task so they were in first place, but were now in fourth place at that particular detour.

Back at the slack line one, the lawyers were finishing up when the hair stylists had done the zip line part and just had to get over to the other side. The lawyers had the pit stop clue, so they were in first place, which really bummed all of us out since I think we are all done with Jenny being horrible.

The truckers were the first team to get their scents judged. Rochelle did well with her scent, but the one that Mike worked on had used something else besides vanilla. While they were being judged Tyler said he viewed them as a weak team so he didn’t care if they were ahead. Laura gave him a look like, “Shut up and just concentrate on what we are doing.” Don’t make me dislike you Tyler. When Laura & Tyler had their scents judged, they were both wrong.

While all the perfume teams were stuck trying to figure out the mystery scents, the hair stylists were finishing up the slack line task. That left the JJ team as the last one to go across. Jeff had a hard time. The line he was holding was shaking so bad. No one else had it shake that bad even though it was windy when everyone went across. Matt from the hair stylists was finishing up when Jeff started and his line wasn’t shaking that much. Jackie made up for it since she practically ran across. That meant that both the hair stylists and JJ teams were headed to the pit stop before any of the other teams had finished the perfume task.

The Olympians were the first team to finish the perfume task. It seemed like they did it on their first try. Soon after, Laura & Tyler found a secret scent bottle that they hadn’t noticed and finally got it right. The judge had told them their scent had a grass smell before, but that smell was gone. Laura said, “Hasta la vista, grass!” Steve said, “She used her good French there with the judge. Hasta la vista.” Blair & Hayley got it next and then the truckers finally got it. They were the last team to head to the pit stop.

Getting Lost

We hadn’t seen anyone check into the pit stop, even though it seemed like the lawyers had left their detour a while ago. It was because many teams were getting lost! Hayley & Blair and the truckers got directions as soon as they left their detour and weren’t shown asking for directions again so they might have been the only teams not lost.

The Olympians were stopping to ask for directions over and over again. They were shown asking at least three different people for directions. The lawyers were struggling to find which way to go when they were at a fork in the road where they had to choose between heading to Monaco and Nice. Jelani said the city looked close to Nice on the map they had so that’s the way they went. The lawyers learned later that they were supposed to be heading towards Monaco so they were going the wrong way. Soon after that we saw the JJ team drive by the Nice airport so they also seemed to be going the wrong way. Amy wished the producers would show us on a map where everyone was located in relation to the pit stop.

Jenny was bitching to Jelani for telling her to go the wrong way. When he made some point that she couldn’t argue back with, she said she needed to concentrate on driving and they would talk about it later. He just laughed and said, “I’m sure we will!” They do act like an old married couple that lost their love for each other long ago.

We were only briefly shown the hair stylists so maybe they were never lost and just drove right to where they needed to be.

Pit Stop

As a total shock to us, Hayley and Blair showed up to the pit stop in first place. How did that happen? They left their detour third, but were in sixth place overall since they left after all the slack line teams. They won a trip to South Africa. Blair had a little trepidation on his face about winning a trip with Hayley.

The Olympians came running up in second place and the truckers showed up in third place while Hayley & Blair were still there. It seemed like the sniffing task was closer to the pit stop than the slack line one.  Then Phil asked if there was love in the air. It was two established dating teams and one blind date team that everyone knows don’t like each other, Phil. Stop asking! He tried to ask the other teams if they saw love with Blair & Hayley. I said, “Phil, other teams know they fight all the time.” Amy said, “He is like the super awkward dad.” Then she said, “I am not going to want to watch another season with this bs.”

The lawyers saw the hair stylist while they were headed to the pit stop and Jenny got mad all over again for being lost. The hair stylists could run much faster and got to the mat before the lawyers. They came in fourth. The lawyers came in fifth place and Laura & Tyler were sixth.

That made JJ team come in last place and they were eliminated. Jeff did say that Jackie was the most badass girl. She said she wanted to be with him forever. He looked a little frightened at that comment.
