They Came Together

I’m not a fan of romantic comedies. I should clarify and say that I do enjoy a good love story and adore comedies, but the way Hollywood puts them together in the romantic comedy genre is insulting to men, women, love and basic common sense. I also have been fond of parody movies, but more in the genre of AirplaneThe Naked Gun, and Top Secret than any of the recent Scary Movie versions and other movies that have really bland names that don’t really get what makes a parody movie good. That is why I was thrilled when I learned that David Wain had made this parody of romantic comedies starring the fabulous Amy Poehler and Paul Rudd. David Wain used to be on The State and has shown he knows how to do a parody well with the cult classic Wet Hot American Summer.

I was worried for a moment that I hadn’t seen enough romantic comedies that I might miss what they were parodying, but I had no problems with it. The movie has everything that every classic romantic comedy has from the worried older sister, slacker younger brother to the sassy black friend, and past girlfriend/boyfriend who keep popping up to woo the leads back to them. It has more than just sight gags that more recent parody movies contain, but actually knows a lot about romantic comedies to find what is the same about all of them and then play into that. It still manages to make you care about what’s going on with the characters even though you are laughing at the entire premise. It is similar to Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz in that way.

Also, the cast was awesome. There were so many people in this movie that you have seen from other smart television comedies or from Wet Hot American Summer. After seeing Chris Meloni be so serious on Oz and Law & Order: SVU for so many years, I forget that he can be funny. He should do more comedy.

This isn’t the funniest movie I have seen recently, but it did have me chuckling most of the way through it. And it is always a bonus to see Paul Rudd be adorable for the length of another movie.

Grade: B+
