MWG: Big Trouble in Little China

It is Jim’s turn to pick the movie for us this month. Here is what he said when asked to pick a movie, “I’m going to go with the great John Carpenter masterpiece, Big Trouble in Little China.” I’m surprised he didn’t pick it sooner.
Netflix synopsis: Traveling through a shadowy world filled with supernatural creatures and spectacular action, regular guy Jack Burton (Kurt Russell) and lawyer Gracie Law (Kim Cattrall) try to track down a 2,000-year-old magician, Lo Pan (James Hong), who has kidnapped Burton’s friend’s green-eyed fiancée. John Carpenter directs this adventurous spoof of the martial-arts movie genre set in San Francisco’s Chinatown district.

My brother loved this movie. We had to watch it every time it came on cable. I found it cheesy even back then and I loved cheesy movies. I think I was turned off by the overacting, yet I didn’t know that is what annoyed me. I remember thinking Jack Burton was a dork and I hated Gracie Law so much that whenever I would see Kim Cattrall in any future role, I immediately hated her. That meant she really had to win me over as Samantha on Sex and the City.
But back to this movie. I did laugh at the amount of times that Jack Burton was completely soaked and then his hair would be back to its blown-dried mullet. It has not aged well though. I found it even cornier than I remembered. This does seem to be a total guy’s movie since all guys seem to love it and I when I watch it, I just can’t wait for it to be over.
