MWG: My Name Is Bruce
Posted On April 15, 2009
April is Stacy’s month to pick a movie for us to all watch and review. She is a fan of Bruce Campbell, so she selected his latest movie for our viewing pleasure.
Mistaken for the character he plays in the Evil Dead films, B-movie icon Bruce Campbell (playing himself) is kidnapped by the citizens of a small mining town who want him to save them from a vengeful demon. At first, Campbell thinks it’s all part of an elaborate prank. But when he realizes the demon is in fact real, he comes face to face with a second terrifying enemy — his own fear. Ted Raimi co-stars in this tongue-in-cheek comedy.

It’s worth saying that I found myself multi-tasking and distracted during this movie. When the movie first started I thought “OMG, I’m soooo sorry.” It starts like a movie that aspires to be a B movie. Then Bruce Campbell comes on screen and all is right with the world 🙂 It is not spectacular but he is Bruce and he cracks me up. I did not think that this movie had enough of him actually. Ted Raimi is also several characters and I really like him too. I think they could have done a little more work on the story. This is an epic battle between Bruce and the Patron Saint of Bean Curd (not making that up, I couldn’t have). I get the satire but a little bit more of a budget would have been nice. It’s worth renting, probably best watched with people who will make funny remarks or ungodly amounts of alcohol.
This was a total B-, C- or D-grade movie. Bruce making fun of his many bad movies was hilarious. I actually didn’t like the very bad stereotype characters that Ted Raimi played. I thought they borderlined on racist, so that bugged me. Beyond that, I enjoyed it and loved that the bad guy was the protector of bean curd. I also loved the huge cardboard cut out of Bruce Campbell that was pivotal to the final fight scene.
I forgot about the cardboard cutout, that was funny. I can see what you man about the characters Ted Raimi played. I should have paid more attention, I think the extent was “ooh there’s Ted Raimi.” I like him from Xena or Hercules or whichever of those old, bad shows he was on. I wanted to watch the movie again because I missed alot but then I realized that I wasn’t paying attention for a reason and put it away. Oh poor Bruce, we need another Army of Darkness caliber film!
very funny! I liked the extras better than the film itself – super funny story of making the movie, it seems like all the people really enjoy working with each other.
I did not understand the first part of this movie because I thought they were saying Juan D when they were singing, and I was like – well that is nice that a non chinese person would be sad about the chinese people dying
but it is Quan D
so now it makes more sense
lol
that’s basically my review!
I also didn’t like the stereotype things but I was thinking maybe they were making fun of bad movies using stereotypes? maybe not, but the movie would have been fine without it.
I loved the kid’s Bruce shrine and his awesome hairdo at the end! I also loved the singing narrative!
here is what I said on irc while watching:
