Amy is moving us into the classics with this romantic movie that she hasn’t seen, but wanted to check out, so the rest of us will too!
Netflix synopsis: The date which lives in infamy lives on in this gripping adaptation of James Jones‘ novel about Army life in Hawaii in the idyllic days just before December 7, 1941. Eight Oscars include Best Picture, Screenplay, Supporting Actress (Donna Reed) and Supporting Actor (Frank Sinatra). Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr rolling around in the waves and sand ranks as one of the hottest love scenes in screen history.

I hope this movie is fun to watch! I am suggesting a delicious tropical beverage, in a hollowed out pineapple if you can arrange that, or perhaps you have a pineapple shaped sippy cup like mine? then use that! I’m thinking something with rum! and some shish ka bobish snacks, just put what you want to eat on tiny sticks and eat that while watching this movie!
Oh no! I am constantly one movie behind. I guess that now that you have picked this, I might actually get it together to watch the last one. I will try to take your advice on the snacks, but pineapples are out of season. Maybe just some pineapple juice and malibu? I have to say, from the picture on the cover, that looks like a bad place to make out. They totally could get hurt!
well, let me say that you probably won’t be in the mood for happy fun rum drinks and food on a stick during this movie! Even though the Pearl Harbor attack doesn’t happen until the end, this movie is depressing! All the people are totally messed up and continue to mess up their lives! No one is happy to even be in Hawaii! And apparently the book was even worse!
So, I guess I’m glad I can say I watched this movie, but I will not watch it again. The acting seems weird to me, but maybe that is just the old style?
I did watch the special features and they had the director talking about how he had to fight with the studio head over casting for the roles and that was interesting to hear about the old studio system and how they’d have someone on salary (under contract) and so that’s who the studio would want to be in a movie.
I enjoyed this movie. I have no details on why this is so.
It took a bit of time to get into the old-movie rhythm, but I did enjoy it after I got used to it. I did not find the beach scene as romantic as I thought it would be. It could be that I watched it too many times before I actually saw the movie. I found the scene earlier when the two characters kissed in her house had more chemistry. They were the main storyline, but I didn’t find it as interesting as Montgomery Clift’s storyline. I liked it a lot, even if it did end sadly. Good movie!
I finally watched this, but totally forgot about the rum drink and snacks. I really liked the Sergeant, Burt Lancaster’s character. I thought he was the best part of the movie. I also really liked Frank Sinatra’s character. Montgomery Clift was pushing some of my whiney buttons, not as whiney as Star Wars Episode III (which is the very end of my whiney scale) but enough for me to want to shake him. I think it started when he switched companies because he wasn’t the best bugle player anymore. The rolling on the beach scene was surprising because it can’t even be called “rolling” on the beach. It was more like one half roll. I wondered what it was like when this movie came out as though there were no “sex” scenes there sure was alot of sex. I wondered if this was taboo or generally accepted. Good flick though, everyone was very dramatic and intense right from the very beginning.
