Heath Ledger is super creepy as the Joker and Maggie Gyllenhaal has thankfully taken the role abandoned by Katie Holmes.

Lately, when I have been watching movies, I snooze a bit during some part of it. Usually only for a few seconds, but it still happens every time. Even though this movie was over 2 1/2 hours long, I didn’t doze off once. I was even amazed that I never felt tired the entire movie. I could feel it was a long one, but I didn’t want it to end. I was willing to have the movie go on forever.

I could not get enough of the Joker. Heath Ledger was awesome. I kept having to remind myself that it was him since he completely lost himself in the role. He was icky with greasy hair. He kept darting his tongue out like a lizard, which was oft putting. He had no concern if anyone liked or respected him and whenever he giggled, I giggled. I enjoyed it whenever he was on the screen. It made me sad that he is no longer around since I would love for him to show up again.

I read that the movie had more comparisons to a thriller or the Departed, which I could see, but I’m not sure if it would have come to my mind while watching it. It did seem more set in reality than other superhero movies and especially the Batman movies that Tim Burton did. They were so goofy with the villains that suspension of disbelief was required. This movie was very real in the way that Bruce Wayne was very upset about people dying, thinking it was his fault, and I felt that some of the craziness could actually happen. Of course, you do have to suspend your disbelief with his fabulous Batmobile and little motorcycle, but it was awesome to watch him do tricks with his crazy cars.

Maggie Gyllenhaal was a vast improvement over Katie Holmes, but that shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone. She played Rachel with so much more confidence that I don’t think Katie Holmes would have been able to pull off. I completely bought the chemistry between her and Christian Bale. It felt like they had known each other for years so it was like Katie Holmes never played the same character.

My only complaint was the crazy Batman voice. I know he wanted to have a different voice so no one would recognize him talking, but it was so weird that I found it distracting. I guess my other complaint would be that I really wished that Christian Bale showed up more as Bruce Wayne since he looked excellent in his suits, beautiful in general and he talked in his normal voice. Just a personal preference there.
