MWG: Heathers
Stacy has joined the Movie Watching Group so she picked the May movie. She was a big fan of Christian Slater in the ’80s. She was going to go with Gleaming the Cube, but that was not available to rent on DVD so she went with Heathers. I think that is a much better choice. Watch and review!
Netflix synopsis: At Westburg High, you’re either a Heather or a nobody. And while Veronica Sawyer (Winona Ryder) may not be named Heather, she’s a Heather in spirit, waging battles in the full-scale popularity war. But just when it all gets to be too much, she meets mysterious newcomer Jason (Christian Slater), who offers her the perfect — albeit deadly — solution to end the Heathers’ social tyranny. Teen angst has rarely been this darkly funny or poignant.

I still have a huge crush on Christian Slater. I think it’s the voice, because he is actually very skinny in this movie. It’s always funny to see people when they were very young. I forgot how disturbing he actually was in this movie. In particular when he lit his cigarette on Winona Ryder’s hand.
I think that I have to agree with the school counselor that suicide is one of the most important decisions a teenager can make. I think it falls right after who to ask for prom and what to wear on the first day of school.
Most importantly this movie convinced me that I want everyone to wear 3D glasses to my funeral. That was awesome.

I loved this movie when it first came out. I loved the way they talked and how it was so dark and cynical. Watching it again, I wondered if I would find it outdated and cheesy. The outfits were hilarious, and sometimes when the first Heather was going off on Veronica at the Remington party, I laughed at what she was saying since it was so ridiculous. Otherwise, it all seemed to fit into the movie and I still love the catchphrase, “F**k me gently with a chainsaw.” What a classic. There are also other fabulous lines, such as, “Oh, the humanity,” and “I love my dead gay son!”
I had a big crush on Christian Slater when I originally watched the movie, and had no clue he was pretty much impersonating Jack Nicholson at the time. I remember how I couldn’t believe that his character was so cruel when he lit his cigarette from her hand. I was ready for many bad things to happen to him at that point.
I loved the ending, especially after going through the bonus material on the DVD to read the script for the original ending. It wasn’t made since it was deemed too dark, but the dark part wasn’t too far off from what actually happened. After that, it seemed beyond cheesy and dorky, so I’m very glad the ending that was filmed became the real ending.
Rating: A-
I really liked this movie back in the day and I still like it! I loved seeing all the fashions and how everyone had their own color! I remember thinking how awesome it would be to play croquet in the back yard and being all jealous of that.
so many good lines in this movie! I never really thought of this as a dark movie but I guess I just think it’s okay to off mean people – perhaps I should start being nice!
Christian Slater was very cute in this movie and I had a little trip down memory lane remembering when I totally loved him SO MUCH!!! Also I was thinking how much I made out with my boyfriend in high school and that made me giggle. Maybe TMI there, anyways, good movie, loved watching it again!
