Superbad

Director: Greg Mottola
Starring: Jonah Hill, Michael Cera, Christopher Mintz-Plasse

Seth and Evan are best friends, inseparable, navigating the last weeks of high school. Usually shunned by the popular kids, Seth and Evan luck into an invitation to a party, and spend a long day, with the help of their nerdy friend Fogell, trying to score enough alcohol to lubricate the party and inebriate two girls, Jules and Becca, so they can kick-start their sex lives and go off to college with a summer full of experience and new skills.

I’m generally a fan of Judd Apatow’s movies like The 40-Year Old Virgin and Knocked Up, so I was very excited to get a chance to see Superbad via Netflix.

Cera and Hill are high school seniors who basically spend every waking moment together, doing nerdy things and plotting various horny teen escapades. They’re joined by a third friend, the ultra-geeky Fogell. The three of them luck into a party invite with the expectation that the fake ID Fogell is about to get will allow them to get alcohol. Tons of crazy and random things happen as the three work their way to the party.

Fogell’s fake ID of course, is the infamous 25-year old, organ donor from Hawaii named simply, McLovin. As McLovin tries to buy booze, the store gets robbed and he gets punched in the face by the perp. Seth Rogen and SNL’s Bill Hader end up being the cops assigned to the case and more hilarity ensues. They take a liking to McLovin and offer him a ride to the party, but instead keep dragging him around to various police calls throughout the night.

While the robbery occurred, Jonah Hill was busy being run into by an unlicensed driver. Cera and Hill try to blackmail the guy into buying booze for them, but he only has $7.00. Instead, he insists on taking them to a party he’s on his way to, where they figure they can steal alcohol. It ends up that the driver was actually crashing the party, he gets beat up and thrown out. Jonah Hill bumps and grinds with the menstruating fiancee of the crazy guy throwing this party and manages to smuggle a bunch of beer out by putting it in liquid detergent containers. Cera gets mistaken for someone’s brother, who the people at the party think is a singer. He sings “These Eyes” for a bunch of coked out guys…they love it.

It really is that random and that crazy. And that doesn’t cover what happens once they get to the party or McLovin’s exploits while riding around with the cops.

I can’t say enough good things about this movie. It’s stupid, crazy, and really funny. It deserves a spot right up there with the great teen comedies of all-time. I give it a rare, certified 5-stars.
